portrait / Reflections

When I started the portrait shoot, the only guidance I gave the model was do whatever feels natural, just interact with the environment. She did a great job with minimal guidance, and I shot about 140 photos. Looking through the RAW shots, a theme of reflections evolved and carried through most of the poses. I toyed with the color on about 10 shots, but these three in Black and White really intrigued me. I feel they represent reflections in three different but related ways.

independent / Retrospective of a small town in the South

The 10 photos in the section show two sides of a small town in the southernUnited States. The Black and White pictures are all (with the exception of the oil derricks) images of vacant buildings just off the town square. The square is lively with local businesses and Christmas decorations, while these buildings are vacant, quiet, and in varying stages of decay. There is a calm to these places that feels as though they are out of place and time. The blue shots are of several of the same locations, but they are shot at night with blue LED lights. The modern lighting completely changes the character of the buildings. Some are more eerie and slighting disturbing, while others are enhanced. Two of the shots seem warmer and livelier.

landscape / Lake Columbia at Sunset

We were returning from shooting at another location for a different part of this showcase, and saw the sign for Lake Columbia. We decided to go see if we could catch the sunset. It was a longer drive than I expected and we almost missed it, but it turned out we got there at exactly the right time to capture both sunset and moonrise. I went out on a narrow jetty that jutted about 150 feet into the lake. I went to the end of the jetty and setup the tripod and camera. By lucky chance, I was able to capture the sunset on one side, then turn around and catch the moonrise and dock lights reflecting on the water on the other side. These shots show how perspective can change just by turning around.
